You want to make impactful documentaries about the US, told through the unique lens of a European perspective. But how do you get access, expertise, and the experience needed to source and make great factual films about America?

You may have a brilliant idea for a documentary but be unsure how to deal with purely US-based companies. Do they really understand the European mindset? Are they willing to offer the best and most cost-effective production values? Do American production companies, working on American stories, really know how to connect with European filmmakers who want to tell incredible US-based stories but with our unique lens?

It’s a niche, to be sure, which is why you need a production company that specializes in it. At Alamo Pictures, we’re dedicated solely to unearthing and telling powerful and impactful American stories for an international audience.

Alamo Pictures Will Help You

Create Outstanding Factual Films About the US

While other production companies based in the US often have no experience in working alongside Europeans, that’s our sole purpose.

We work in London and the US. We’re based in Europe but have extensive contacts in America. Our unique combination of links to and within America and international production and business experience gives us a depth of knowledge and ability to source stories that matter that you won’t find elsewhere.

When you work with us you get a European team who understands how the US ticks and can navigate the market while doing prep, back-office tasks, and post-production outside of America – saving time and costs.

Our evolved ‘one-stop-shop’ method of production means you get support for your film every step of the way – from conceptualization through filming, post-production, and distribution.

Our combined years of experience working and living in America and Europe means we have a unique position as informed outsiders – offering a fresh but accessible perspective on US stories – ideal for appealing to an international audience.

How have we built this cosmopolitan combination who can tap into the very best of factual America?

You Can Work with ‘Informed Outsiders’ – And Get the Best Possible Access to Factual Storytelling

When you work with Alamo Pictures, you will get a senior team who really have their fingers on the pulse of American storytelling.

Our founder, Sebastian Sauerborn, hails from the Black Forest in Germany. After buying a ranch near Austin, Texas, he fell in love with the US. His business interests in Europe and America over the last two decades have given him a unique perspective as someone who has lived, worked, run businesses and helped others to connect to the US. He has extensive media experience on radio shows and podcasts, as well as hosting his own ‘Move Your Business to the United States’ podcast, alongside being executive producer of Alamo Pictures factual films.

Development Executive, Matthew Sherwood, is a born and bred American and Duke graduate, who has enjoyed a successful journalistic career, including working for The Economist in the UK. His search for truth in a post-truth world and love for America led him naturally to documentary films and Alamo Pictures. He also hosts and co-produces ‘Factual America’ our popular podcast.

Together we form the core senior team at Alamo Pictures. Our combination of industry, business and personal experience in and outside the US mean we’re ideally placed not only to source amazing stories, but get them funded and promoted so your stories get seen.

One of the key ways we do this is our laser focus on US-based stories. Our combined backgrounds and experience are of course one reason for this – we love the US and the treasure trove of stories it holds. But, we’re motivated by more than just a wealth of storytelling opportunities.

From a Uniquely European Perspective, Following the Incredible Success of European-made Stories

At Alamo Pictures, we’re proud to follow a succession of successful and impactful European documentary filmmakers who have achieved great storytelling with their ability to use an outsider’s keen eye that helps audiences to understand what really makes America tick.

Clearly sometimes it takes an outsider to ask the key questions. We’re dedicated to asking those important questions and telling the stories that matter. But great storytelling is about more than just finding the stories – how do we get them to the audiences that want them?

Here’s how Alamo Pictures Gets Incredible Stories in International Audiences – With an Evolved
One-Stop-Shop for A Changing Industry

The film industry has changed significantly in the last couple of decades. There are no longer clearly defined and separated roles when it comes to production and distribution. Unlike traditional film companies, who need the support of distribution outlets to get their film out, we cover the entire process.
As a one-stop-shop for documentary filmmaking about America, we finance, create, distribute and promote our films. This is key to our value as independent and fearless documentary storytellers, freeing us up to tell better and clearer stories.
On a financial level, combining as much as possible of the value chain under one roof makes us more independent and enables us to get a better deal for our investors. We work alongside traditional film financiers, distribution companies, sales agents and PR experts and other production companies for co-productions. Yet having more of the value chain of filmmaking under our own control gives us more independence to do what we truly care about.
Get alternative routes to access finance for your project. We do not go to investors who typically invest in filmmaking yet we are able to raise the finance we need for factual storytelling.
Take advantage of our large, valuable network of personal contacts that the company management has amassed throughout their careers outside the film industry.
You can have access to many high net worth individuals who are keen to raise awareness of the stories we tell in our films.
We work on the distribution and promotion of our films. While many filmmakers struggle to get the word out about their films, we are constantly growing our own audience. Whenever we want to promote a film, we can do so to a loyal and well-nurtured audience of hundreds of thousands of individuals who follow our successful podcast ‘Factual America’, and who follow us on social media and receive our newsletters. Our audience is already interested in documentaries about America.

Covid 19: At Alamo Pictures, It’s Business as Usual in the Times of Coronavirus

Here at Alamo Pictures we are open for business. Yes, you read that right: we are open for business. Perhaps it’s because of our name. Whatever the defenders of the Alamo where they did not thrown in the towel, give into defeatism, sit around moaning about their lot – no, they may have all died but they died fighting. That same spirit of resilience is what is going to get Alamo Pictures – and you – through this time.

Think creatively about ways in which you can work now. Some documentarians who rely heavily on archive footage will be in their element! They have no excuse and no distraction from hours of work in their editing suites. Are there any films that can be constructed upon these lines? We’d like to hear your thoughts.
